Hi there,
Welcome back to “Hey Coach Darren” – the advice column where I’ll be sharing my top three tips on a different topic each week, inspired by real-life scenarios from our current members (and you)!
Fruit can sometimes cause confusion when it comes to weight loss. While fruit is a natural, nutrient-dense option, understanding the impact of fruit sugars and making the right choices is key to aligning your nutrition with your fitness goals. If you’re working hard at the gym or participating in group workouts, choosing the right fruits can help fuel your efforts without undermining your progress.
This week, one of our FitTRAC members reached out with concerns about making the best fruit choices to support his weight loss journey and gym performance. Here is what he asked:
“Hey Coach Darren, I’ve always been a fan of fruit, but now that I’m focusing on weight loss and spending more time at the gym, I’m unsure of what’s best to eat. I keep hearing that the sugars in fruit can make it hard to lose weight, and it’s been confusing to know which ones to include and which ones to avoid.
Are there certain fruits that are better for weight loss than others? Should I be worried about the sugar content, or is it okay as long as I’m eating the right portions? I’d love some guidance on making smart fruit choices that can also support my workouts!”
Fruit is amazing! So to clear up the confusion and help you make smarter choices, here are three strategies for incorporating fruit into your diet without compromising your weight loss or workout efforts:
Choose High-Fiber, Low-Calorie Fruits for Satiety: If you’re active at the gym or participating in group workouts, maintaining energy while staying on track with your weight loss is crucial.
Some fruits, like berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), apples, and pears, are lower in calories but high in fiber, making them excellent choices for keeping you full and satisfied between workouts.
Fiber helps slow digestion, stabilizes blood sugar, and keeps you feeling fuller for longer, which is key when you’re managing your energy intake to support weight loss. Adding these fruits as snacks before a group workout can provide sustained energy without excess calories.
Be Mindful of Portions With High-Sugar Fruits: While all fruits offer health benefits, some, like bananas, grapes, mangoes, and cherries, are higher in natural sugars.
If you’re working on weight loss while still hitting the gym hard, it’s best to consume these fruits in moderation. Stick to smaller portions—like half a banana or a small handful of grapes—to get the benefits without overloading on sugar.
This is especially important if you’re refueling after a workout, as combining these fruits with a protein source like Greek yogurt can prevent blood sugar spikes and keep you energized for your next session.
Opt for Water-Rich, High-Volume Fruits: Hydration is key, especially if your workout routine involves intense cardio or heavy lifting. Water-rich fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges, and strawberries are ideal because they’re low in calories and high in volume, which helps keep you full and hydrated.
These fruits are perfect for snacking between meals or post-workout, as they provide a refreshing boost without excess sugars. Including them in your diet helps satisfy your sweet cravings while supporting both hydration and weight management.
Remember, fruit is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are beneficial for your overall health. Choosing the right types in appropriate portions will allow you to enjoy fruit’s natural sweetness while staying on track with your goals.
