Hey Coach Darren Vol. 72

Hi there,

Welcome back to “Hey Coach Darren” – the advice column where I’ll be sharing my top three tips on a different topic each week, inspired by real-life scenarios from our current members (and you)!
Starting a fitness journey, whether in the gym or at home, can feel daunting, especially when you’ve faced setbacks in the past. It’s natural to wonder how to stay positive and focused when the road ahead seems long.

This week, one of our new members reached out with a question that many of you might relate to. She’s at the beginning of her journey, feeling the weight of her past struggles, and wants advice on how to stay optimistic as she tackles her goals head-on. Here’s her question:

“Hey Coach Darren, I’m at the very beginning of a long journey. I have a lot of weight to lose, and I’ve struggled with this for years. Every time I try, I start strong but lose motivation and end up feeling defeated.

I remember one time I was doing so well for the first few weeks, but then I hit a rough patch at work, skipped a few workouts, and before I knew it, I was back to old habits. I felt like I had failed, again.

How can I stay optimistic this time around and really believe that I can succeed?”

This is such an important question, and I know many others share the same concerns when starting a new fitness journey. Here are some strategies that can help you stay positive and build lasting momentum as you work toward your goals:
Focus on Progress, Not Perfection: The number one key to staying optimistic is shifting your focus from perfection to progress. Too often, we get discouraged because we expect to see massive results overnight, and when we don’t, we feel like we’ve failed.

But real, lasting change takes time. Celebrate the small wins: maybe you walked an extra five minutes today, made a healthier meal choice, or simply showed up to a workout when you didn’t feel like it. Each of these is a victory.

By celebrating progress in all its forms, you’ll stay motivated and see that every step forward is a success.

Break Your Goals into Manageable Milestones & Visualize Your Success: Instead of focusing on the total amount of weight you want to lose, break it down into smaller, more achievable milestones.

Setting mini-goals, like losing five pounds at a time or focusing on improving a single healthy habit each week, makes the process feel less overwhelming. Each milestone you reach will give you a sense of accomplishment, and over time, these smaller successes will add up to significant progress.

Visualization is also a powerful tool to keep you motivated and optimistic. Spend a few minutes each day picturing yourself reaching your goals—whether it’s wearing clothes that make you feel confident, running a 5K, or simply feeling more energized after a gym session.

By regularly visualizing your success, you create a positive mental image that reinforces your belief that you will get there, helping you stay motivated during tough moments.

Surround Yourself with Positive Influences: Optimism can sometimes be hard to maintain on your own, which is why your environment matters. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, whether it’s supportive friends, family, or a fitness community like ours here at FitTRAC.

If you’ve been going to the gym, it helps to surround yourself with others working toward similar goals. Share your goals and let others encourage you.

Also, fill your world with positive influences, like inspiring books, podcasts, or social media accounts that promote healthy, uplifting messages. By keeping your mental environment as positive as possible, you’ll be able to stay motivated even on the toughest days.

Any journey isn’t about being perfect from day one. It’s about showing up, learning, and celebrating every bit of progress. Optimism comes from knowing that each step you take brings you closer to your goals.
