Hey Coach Darren Vol. 67

Hi there,

Welcome back to “Hey Coach Darren” – the advice column where I’ll be sharing my top three tips on a different topic each week, inspired by real-life scenarios from our current members (and you)!
Hydration is crucial for overall health and well-being, but drinking plain water can sometimes feel tedious. Exploring alternative hydration sources, like unflavored, unsweetened sparkling water, can provide variety and make it easier to stay hydrated.

That’s what this FitTRAC member thought, but he had questions about the efficacy of non-plain water as a source for his hydration. Specifically, he has concerns about carbon dioxide in the sparkling waters that he has been drinking! Let’s explore the benefits of sparkling water and some alternative ways other than plain water to keep your hydration levels up:

“Hey Coach Darren, I’ve been drinking unflavored and unsweetened sparkling water because I find plain water to be quite boring. However, I’m still unsure if it’s healthy for me given that it contains carbon dioxide.

I’m curious if sparkling water hydrates as effectively as regular water. Additionally, I’d love to know about other interesting ways to stay hydrated without having to drink plain water all the time.

Can you provide some advice on this and suggest some tasty, healthy alternatives to plain water for staying hydrated?”

Great question! Especially since hydration is never more important that it is during these hotter summer months! Here are my tips to stay hydrated by any means necessary (including sparkling water!):
The Benefits and Hydration Power of Sparkling Water: Sparkling water, whether flavored or unflavored, can be just as hydrating as regular water. The presence of carbon dioxide does not negatively impact its ability to keep you hydrated.

In fact, for those who find plain water monotonous, sparkling water can be a refreshing alternative that encourages you to drink more throughout the day! Just make sure your sparkling water is free from added sugars and artificial sweeteners to keep it a healthy choice.

Drinking sparkling water can also help with digestion and provide a sense of fullness, making it a versatile addition to your hydration routine.

Hydrating Foods to Boost Your Water Intake: Another excellent way to stay hydrated is by incorporating hydrating foods into your diet. Foods with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and strawberries, can significantly contribute to your daily hydration needs. These foods not only help keep you hydrated but also provide essential vitamins and minerals.

Including a variety of these water-rich foods in your meals and snacks can make hydration more enjoyable and nutritious. Additionally, these foods can be refreshing and satisfying, especially during warmer months (like right now), making it easier to maintain your hydration levels.

Infused Water & Coconut Water for Flavorful Hydration If you’re looking for ways to make your hydration routine more exciting, consider infusing your water with fruits, herbs, or vegetables. This adds a subtle flavor without the need for added sugars or artificial ingredients.

Popular combinations include cucumber and mint, lemon and lime, or berries and basil. Not only do these infusions add a burst of flavor, but they also provide a slight nutrient boost, making your hydration both tasty and beneficial. You can experiment with different combinations to find what you like best, and the visual appeal of infused water can make it even more enjoyable to drink.

Coconut water is another great alternative to plain water, offering natural electrolytes like potassium and magnesium. It’s a low-calorie, low-sugar option compared to many sports drinks, making it a healthier choice for staying hydrated.

Coconut water can be particularly beneficial after intense exercise or on hot days when you need to replenish lost electrolytes. Just be sure to choose varieties that are free from added sugars and artificial flavors to get the most health benefits.

Remember, staying hydrated doesn’t have to be boring. By exploring different hydration options, you can keep your routine interesting while maintaining your health and wellness. Whatever your preferences are, the key is to stay consistent and find what works best for you.
