Hi there,
Welcome back to “Hey Coach Darren” – the advice column where I’ll be sharing my top three tips on a different topic each week, inspired by real-life scenarios from our current members (and you)!
Nuts are crunchy, tasty, and convenient, and are often thought of as a solid protein source (they’re really a healthy fat source). Given the common misconceptions around nuts, the question beckons: do they fit into a healthy diet, especially if you’re trying to lose weight?
One of our members recently reached out with a question about exactly this and the pros and cons of eating nuts, particularly when it comes to weight loss. Let’s delve into their query and explore whether nuts should be part of your diet.:
“Hey Coach Darren, I’ve recently started eating nuts as a quick snack because I really enjoy the way they taste. However, I’ve heard that nuts can be a deterrent to weight loss because of their high calories.
Can you provide some information about the pros and cons of nuts? I’m particularly interested in understanding how they might impact my weight loss journey and if there are specific types of nuts that are better or worse for this purpose.
Should I continue eating them, or are they not a good choice for someone trying to lose weight?”
I really enjoying nuts too, so this is right up my alley! And I also have to be intentional about how much I eat because as tasty as they are, like everything, they can be overeaten if not done so in moderation. Here’s how to healthily enjoy nuts:
Caloric Considerations: While nuts are nutrient-rich, it is true that they are also high in calories. This can be a concern if you’re trying to lose weight, as consuming too many calories can hinder weight loss progress.
However, the key is portion control. A small handful of nuts (about 1 ounce or 28 grams) can be a healthy, satisfying snack without overloading on calories. Be mindful of portion sizes to enjoy the benefits without the extra calories.
Choosing raw or dry-roasted nuts over those with added oils, salts, or sweeteners can also help manage calorie intake and keep your snacking healthier.
Choosing the Right Nuts: Not all nuts are created equal when it comes to weight loss and calorie content. Some nuts, like almonds, pistachios, and cashews, are lower in calories compared to others like macadamia nuts and pecans.
Opting for nuts that have a lower calorie content can allow you to enjoy a larger portion without consuming too many calories. Additionally, selecting unsalted and unflavored nuts can help you avoid added sodium and sugars that can derail your diet.
Pay attention to the type of nuts you choose to maximize their health benefits while supporting your weight loss efforts.
Incorporating Nuts into a Weight Loss Plan & Timing of Intake: Nuts can still be part of a weight loss plan when eaten in moderation. They can help curb cravings and provide lasting energy due to their protein and fiber content.
Consider incorporating nuts into your meals rather than just as snacks. For example, adding a small amount to salads, yogurt, or oatmeal can enhance the meal’s nutritional value and keep you full longer.
Remember, balance and variety are key to a healthy diet. Additionally, pairing nuts with other healthy foods like fruits or vegetables can help create a more balanced snack that supports your weight loss goals.
The timing of when you eat nuts can also impact your weight loss journey. Eating nuts as a part of your breakfast or morning snack can provide sustained energy throughout the day and help prevent mid-morning hunger pangs. Including nuts in your meals earlier in the day gives your body more time to metabolize the calories and utilize the energy.
Conversely, consuming nuts late at night might not be as beneficial if you’re trying to manage your calorie intake. Strategically timing your nut consumption can help you stay on track with your weight loss goals while still enjoying this healthy snack.
In summary, nuts can be a valuable addition to your diet, even when trying to lose weight, as long as they are consumed in moderation. They offer numerous health benefits and can help keep you satisfied, preventing overeating.
