Hi there,
Welcome back to ‘Hey Coach Darren’ – the advice column where I’ll be sharing my top three tips on a different topic each week, inspired by real-life scenarios from our current members (and you)!
Last week, we talked about staying on track with your fitness goals during summer vacations. This week, we’ll explore another seasonal topic that can help you stay healthy and energized.
We’re diving into the best fruits and veggies coming into season this summer and examining the pros and cons of dried fruits, particularly for those focused on weight loss. Thanks to this FitTRAC member for asking the following:
“Hey Coach Darren, I want to eat more fruits and vegetables this summer, but I’m not sure which ones are in season and the best options for my diet. Additionally, I eat a lot of dried fruits because they’re convenient and easy to carry around, but I’m trying to lose weight and I’m not sure if they’re the best choice.
I’ve read that dried fruits can be high in sugar and calories, which concerns me. Can you give me some advice on which fresh fruits and vegetables I should focus on this summer and whether dried fruits are a good option for someone with my weight loss goals?”
As summer approaches, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of the season’s fresh produce. Not only are fruits and vegetables tastier when they’re in season, but they also pack a nutritional punch. Here’s how to eat more of the right types this summer, and some advice on dried f:
Seasonal Summer Produce to Enjoy: Summer is the prime time for a variety of delicious and nutritious fruits and vegetables. Some of the best fruits to enjoy this season include berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), stone fruits (peaches, nectarines, plums), and melons (watermelon, cantaloupe).
Vegetables that peak in summer include tomatoes, zucchini, bell peppers, cucumbers, and corn. These fruits and veggies are not only fresh and flavorful but also packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health.
Incorporating More Fresh Produce into Your Diet: To maximize the benefits of fresh, seasonal produce, try incorporating these fruits and veggies into your meals and snacks. Start your day with a smoothie made from summer berries and leafy greens. Add slices of cucumber and bell pepper to your salads for a refreshing crunch.
Snack on a piece of fresh fruit or make a fruit salad for dessert. By focusing on fresh produce, you’ll increase your intake of fiber and essential nutrients while keeping your calorie consumption in check.
Pros and Cons of Dried Fruits: Dried fruits can be a convenient and tasty snack, but they come with some pros and cons, especially if you’re aiming for weight loss.
On the plus side, dried fruits are nutrient-dense, providing fiber, vitamins, and minerals in a compact form. They’re also easy to store and carry, making them a great on-the-go snack.
However, they are also high in natural sugars and calories, which can add up quickly if you’re not mindful of portion sizes. Some dried fruits also have added sugars, which can hinder your weight loss goals. To balance it out, choose dried fruits with no added sugars and enjoy them in moderation.
Incorporating more fresh produce and understanding the role of dried fruits can significantly impact your health journey. By making informed choices, you can enjoy the delicious flavors of summer while working towards your weight loss goals!
