Hi there,
Welcome back to ‘Hey Coach Darren’ – the advice column where I’ll be sharing my top three tips on a different topic each week, inspired by real-life scenarios from our current members (and you)!
As we step into a new year, it’s common to see a surge of New Year’s resolutions, especially around fitness. However, many find their initial burst of motivation waning as the year progresses. In fact, most people give up on their resolutions before January is over!
This week, we’re discussing how to maintain a consistent and effective approach to fitness throughout the entire year, not just in January. Because even though all FitTRAC members are most successful when they workout year-round, we’re all human! And that means that succumbing to the ebbs and flows of resolutions, etc sometimes happens. Just like it has happened to this member before:
“Hey Coach Darren, every year I start with a fierce determination to get fit, setting ambitious New Year’s resolutions. By February, my enthusiasm fizzles out, and I find myself back to square one. I’ve noticed this pattern where my motivation is tied to big moments like New Year’s or an upcoming vacation.
I struggle to maintain a regular fitness routine beyond these bursts of inspiration. I want to break this cycle. Particularly since I’ve joined FitTRAC and have this community to support me – I’m always afraid of regressing into bad habits over time!
Can you provide insights into maintaining consistent fitness habits throughout the year and not just during these high moments?”
I’ll admit it – I’ve tried and failed at resolutions too! So I understand the feeling. But I am here to help, so here are some tips (that I’ll be utilizing myself) to stay on track throughout all of 2024:
Set Smaller, More Frequent Goals: Instead of setting one large goal at the beginning of the year, break it down into smaller, more achievable targets.
For instance, instead of aiming to “lose 30 pounds this year,” set a goal to lose 2-3 pounds each month. Smaller goals are less daunting and provide regular milestones to celebrate, keeping you motivated. Regularly reassess and adjust your goals as you progress.
This not only accommodates your changing abilities and circumstances but also keeps you engaged and prevents plateauing.
Embrace Progressive Overload: To keep your workouts within FitTRAC interesting and challenging, focus on the principle of progressive overload. This means gradually increasing the intensity of your workouts over time.
We’ll help you do this by adding more weight, increasing the number of repetitions, or incorporating more complex movements as you get stronger. This method not only prevents your fitness routine from becoming stagnant but also continuously challenges your body, leading to better strength and endurance.
Additionally, track your progress and celebrate your improvements, no matter how small. Seeing your own progress can be incredibly motivating and encourage you to keep pushing your limits within the supportive environment of FitTRAC.
Find Accountability/Leverage the FitTRAC Community for Accountability: Having someone to share your fitness journey with can significantly increase your commitment. Partner with a friend, join a fitness community, or work with a personal trainer. Sharing your goals, struggles, and successes makes the journey more enjoyable and keeps you accountable.
Of course, since you’re a FitTRAC member, utilize the strong, supportive community here to stay committed to your fitness goals.
Engage with fellow members, participate in group classes, or join a FitTRAC challenge to connect with others who share similar objectives. Sharing your journey with the community not only provides a sense of accountability but also offers a source of motivation and encouragement. Regular interactions and check-ins with your peers and coaches will help keep you on track.
Remember, within the FitTRAC family, you’re never alone on your fitness journey.
Remember, fitness is a journey, not a destination. It’s about progress, not perfection. Keep pushing, keep evolving, and know that every step forward is a step toward a better you.
