Hi there,
Welcome back to “Hey Coach Darren” – the advice column where I’ll be sharing my top three tips on a different topic each week, inspired by real-life scenarios from our current members (and you)!
If you’ve ever finished a sweaty workout feeling drained—or struggled with muscle cramps, headaches, or fatigue—you’ve probably heard someone suggest electrolytes. These essential minerals help with hydration, nerve function, and muscle performance, but it’s easy to get confused about when you actually need them and whether supplements are worth it.
This week, a FitTRAC member reached out after her workout buddy recommended trying electrolyte tablets. She’s been experimenting with different kinds and wants to make sure she’s making a healthy, sustainable choice. Here’s what she asked:
“Hey Coach Darren, my best friend and I work out together a lot, and she swears by electrolyte tablets.
I’ve been trying a few different kinds lately—some flavored powders and some dissolvable tablets—and I do feel a bit better during and after workouts. But I want to make sure this is actually a good idea for my body.
Is it healthy to take electrolytes regularly, and are there pros or cons I should know about?”
Thank you for the question, it’s a good one! Electrolytes are important, but not everyone needs the same approach. Let’s break down the essentials so you can decide what works best for you.
What Electrolytes Actually Do (and Why They Matter): Electrolytes are minerals—like sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium—that help regulate fluid balance, muscle contractions, and nerve signals.
When you sweat (especially during intense or long workouts), you lose electrolytes along with water. If those levels drop too low, you may experience symptoms like cramps, dizziness, or fatigue, even if you’re drinking plenty of water.
Electrolyte supplements can help replenish what’s lost, especially if you’re training hard, sweating heavily, or working out in hot conditions. They can also help improve hydration and endurance for longer workouts.
Know When to Supplement—and Hydrate Proactively: Electrolyte supplements aren’t necessary for every workout, but they can be incredibly helpful when used in the right context.
If you’re doing high-intensity training, working out for over an hour, sweating heavily, or exercising in heat, your electrolyte losses increase significantly—and that’s when replenishing them becomes important.
But don’t wait until you feel drained or cramping to start thinking about hydration. One of the best ways to support performance is to hydrate proactively—throughout the day and especially in the hours leading up to your workout.
Start sipping water earlier rather than trying to catch up mid-session, and if you know your training will be intense, adding a quality electrolyte supplement beforehand can help prevent fatigue and boost endurance.
Use electrolytes strategically, not reactively, and you’ll feel the difference in both performance and recovery.
Choose Quality Sources—Supplements or Whole Foods: Electrolyte supplements can be effective, but not all products are created equal. Many popular options are packed with unnecessary sugars, artificial colors, or filler ingredients that may do more harm than good.
If you choose to supplement, look for clean, low-sugar options that contain a solid balance of sodium, potassium, and magnesium—the key minerals lost through sweat.
That said, you don’t always need a supplement to stay balanced. Many whole foods naturally replenish electrolytes.
Bananas, oranges, avocados, leafy greens, nuts, and seeds are excellent sources of potassium and magnesium, while dairy or fortified alternatives provide calcium. A simple post-workout meal with a mix of these foods—along with a small amount of added salt when needed—can often do the job just as well.
Use supplements when your training demands more, but remember: real food can go a long way.
Electrolyte supplements can absolutely be helpful and healthy when used in the right situations. If they make you feel better during or after workouts, and you’re choosing high-quality products without overdoing it, you’re likely on the right track. Just remember: hydration, diet, and context matter just as much as the supplement itself.
